Increasing residential development and increased concerns about water and air quality in rural areas are making it mandatory for livestock and poultry farmers to properly manage manure and other waste products from their operations. Putnam Soil & Water has criteria for its cooperators for properly storing and applying nutrients from your farm operation, including:
Your Soil & Water office can draft a Manure and/or Waste Utilization Plan for your farm operation.
Soil & Water follows manure management plans of the Natural Resources and Conservation Service (NRCS), which are stricter than EPA guidelines.
Participants follow guidelines which include regular analyses of their soil, rotating crops and assure adequate acreage on which the manure is applied.
Federal cost-share money is available to operators as a means of reducing costs of installing a quality manure/waste management system for their farm operation.
Call Curtis Tobe or Jeff Giesige at Putnam Soil & Water at (419) 523-5159 for more information.
Livestock and poultry producers are looking to composting as a means of properly disposing of dead animals from their farm operations. As regulations on disposal become stricter, Composting is becoming an increasingly popular method of safely disposing dead livestock and poultry. Composting can provide a money-saving, environmentally-friendly method of doing this, and at the same time, become a source of nutrients for cropland.
Putnam Soil & Water can provide assistance to farmers who are interested in installing an animal composting facility on their farm operation. Such facilities can be as simple, complex or inexpensive as they want.
Interested persons can also receive federal cost-share money.
